24 Continuing Education Units
Tuition: $475 until June 14th (increases to $500 on June 15th)
Prerequisites: Must be a practicing massage therapist with at least 24 hours of Oncology Massage training.
Many breast cancer survivors experience pain, lymphedema, and shoulder dysfunction. This course focuses on the basic understanding of the effects of surgery and radiation on the tissues and how scar tissue mobilization can restore healthy functioning to the fascial/musculo-skeletal system. Techniques will include work from The Lauren Berry Method of Corrective Massage™ used to address both the treated and compensatory areas of soft tissue.
Understanding the function of the lymphatic system is essential so there will be a thorough discussion of the lymphatic anatomy and basic lymphatic stimulation techniques to the scar region will be taught. All techniques are of a gentle nature to be respectful of the potential traumas held within the treated tissues, a compromised lymphatic system, post-surgical complications and the residual effects of radiation therapy. This course will include lecture, hands-on, and supervised sessions with clients.
Learning outcomes for this 24-hour NCBTMB Approved course include:
- Understanding physiology and pathology of scar tissue from surgery and radiation and the effects on skin, fascia, muscle and lymphatic structures.
- Recognizing emotional content held in tissues
- Identifying benefits as well as contraindications for scar mobilization
- Assessment skills
- Discussing the anatomy and function of the lymphatic system
- Applying basic lymphatic stimulation techniques to the torso
- Application of scar tissue mobilization to treated areas
- Application of corrective massage techniques to treated and compensatory soft tissue areas
Jamie Elswick, LMT BSc holds a 400-hour certification in oncology massage through the Peregrine Institute. She is a contributing writer to the 2nd edition of Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People Living with Cancer on the topic of scar mobilization for the post mastectomy/radiation client.
